Folks have been coming home to Victorville for more than a hundred years. The city has gone through several incarnations throughout its history, starting from railroad town to farming town to manufacturing center and, now, to a full-fledged 21st century city. In a span of five years alone – from 2001 to 2006 – its population swelled from 61,500 to 95,145. Today, recent estimates from the state’s Department of Finance show that the population is approximately 102,538. All these numbers illustrate how far Victorville has come from its roots as a small railroad stop community on 200 acres back in the 1880s.
Named after Jacob Nash Victor, general manager of the California Southern Railroad, the city was incorporated in 1962. Its population then was 8,110 and the city measured a mere 9.7 square miles in size. Today, Victorville sprawls over 67.68 square miles and is likely to annex even more land in the future as it expands and adds more Victorville new construction.
The city is surrounded by satellite communities whose economies are fueled largely by Victorville. These include Adelanto to the north, Apple Valley to the east and Hesperia to the south.
